Marcelo Sampaio de Alencar

Marcelo Sampaio de Alencar was born in Serrita, Brazil in 1957. He received his Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering, from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil, 1980, his Master Degree in Electrical Engineering, from Universidade Federal da Paraiba (UFPB), Brazil, 1988 and his Ph.D. from University of Waterloo, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Canada, 1993.

Marcelo S. Alencar has over 30 years of engineering experience, and 20 years as an IEEE Member, currently as Senior Member. During that period he was responsible for the creation and administration of six communication and signal processing laboratories in his University, management of several contracts, for consulting and project development, with many companies, agencies, and universities, including Telecom Italia Mobile, MCI-Embratel, Telebras, Chesf, CNPq (Brazilian Council for Scientific Research and Development), Finep (Federal Government Agency to Fund Studies and Projects), UFPE, UFMA, Siemens, Contol, Oi, CSU, Unicamp and Telern. He is member of the Consultative Committee on Digital Television of the Ministry of Communications and member of the Technical Chamber for the Development of Telecommunications (Finep). For 18 years he worked for the Department of Electrical Engineering, Federal University of Paraiba, where he was Full Professor. Since 2003, he is Chair Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Federal University of Campina Grande, Brazil, and supervised over 60 graduate and several undergraduate students. Previously, he worked, between 1982 and 1984, for the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC). While on leave, he spent some time working for Embratel and for the University of Toronto, as Visiting Professor.

He is founder and President of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Communications (Iecom). He has been awarded several scholarships and grants, including three scholarships and several research grants from the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CNPq), a scholarship from the University of Waterloo, a scholarship from the Federal University of Paraiba, an achievement award for contributions to the Brazilian Telecommunications Society (SBrT), an award from the Medicine College of the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG) and an achievement award from the College of Engineering of the Federal University of Pernambuco, during its 110th year celebration. He also received the Medal Professor Attílio Giarola for Academic Merit, from the Brazilian Microwave and Optoelectronics Society.

Probability Theory is a classic topic in any course of exact sciences, that evolved from the amalgamation of different areas of mathematics, including set and measure theory. An axiomatic treatment of probability is presented in the book. Probability Theory is fundamental to several areas of knowledge, including engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, sciences, economics, biology, medicine, social sciences and social communication.

Spectrum sensing deals with several subjects, that range from statistical and probability theory to radio propagation and signal processing, with cognitive radio playing an important role to the evolution and dissemination of new applications in the area.

The objective of this book is to connect the basic statistical formulation, the fundamental concepts from signal detection and spectrum sensing, cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access, leading to an interesting, robust, and illustrative content, with recent practical applications of cognitive radio and spectrum sensing.
