Derek Dunn-Rankin

Derek Dunn-Rankin is Chair of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, as well as a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. Dunn-Rankin is also Regional Director, California Alliance for Minority Participation. He received his M.S. from University of California,Berkeley, Mechanical Engineering, 1984, and his Ph.D. from University of California,Berkeley, Thermal Science, 1985.

Derek Dunn-Rankin has over 40 years of research and professional experience, and has won numerous awards including Senior Member, Optical Society of America, 2011; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor of the Year, Henry Samueli School of Engineering Student Council, 2008-2009; and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellow, November/December, 2008.

He is a visiting scientist worldwide, invited to such academic institutions such as Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo, Japan; Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, London, England; Wright Patterson Air Force Base; and Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore, CA.

Outside of his academic achievements, Dunn-Rankin has often been asked to consult for such companies as ClearSign Combustion; FlexEnergy; Knobbe Martens; California State University Los Angeles; and NASA. His professional activities include sitting on the Editorial Board for Progress in Energy and Combustion Science; sitting on the Editorial Board for Atomization and Sprays; nd sitting on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Aeronautics, Astronautics, and Aviation
