Charles T. Koebel

Charles T. Koebel, PhD, is professor of Urban Planning and Building Construction, and senior associate of the Center for Housing Research at Virginia Tech. His research has focused on affordable housing, innovation in housing, urban redevelopment and regional sustainability planning for housing. He developed a General Model for Construction Innovation Diffusion and has directed research testing various aspects of that model. As the director of the Center for Housing Research from 1990 to 2005, he helped establish it as a leader among university research programs on housing and the built environment. He subsequently served as the program chair of Urban Affairs and Planning from 2005 to 2010. Prior to 1990, he was the associate director for Research at the University of Louisville’s Urban Research Institute.

He has served as an editor of the Journal of Urban Affairs and an associate editor of Housing Policy Debate, as well as an editorial board member of the Journal of American Planning Association and Cityscape. He served as Board Chair of New Directions, Inc., in Louisville, KY and Community Housing Partners, Inc., one of the largest nonprofit housing corporations serving the southeastern US.

Dr. Koebel received the PhD. in Urban Planning and Policy Development from Rutgers University, a Masters in Community Planning from University of Cincinnati, and his undergraduate degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati.
